F&ED This Week

June 10, 2024

A bicyclist weaves between the thin white pillars that hold a massive metal trellis above a plaza. Woody vines climb up several pillars to branch out into conical, leafy masses at their tops, then spread across the trellis to shade the plaza below.

The leafy vines of Margaret McDermott Trellis Plaza offer shelter from the sun in the middle of a summer day at UT Dallas.

This plaza was named in honor of one of the University’s champions, who made massive contributions to the multi-year, multi-million-dollar Campus Landscape Enhancement Project that transformed UTD from an expanse of brutalist concrete buildings into a collection of lush outdoor spaces with terraces, fountains and hundreds of trees.
