Student Success Center / Student Union Groundbreaking

UT Dallas leadership, local and state government officials, our construction partners and members of the surrounding community came together on August 12 to hold the official groundbreaking ceremony for the University’s new Student Success Center / Student Union. A standing-room-only crowd in the Founders Building was addressed by Dr. Richard C. Benson, president of The University of Texas at Dallas, UT System Regent Christina Melton Crain, Texas State Senator Royce West, Texas State Representative Angie Chen Button, City of Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey, Dr. Calvin Jamison, vice president for Facilities & Economic Development, Dr. Inga Musselman, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Gene Fitch, vice president for Student Affairs, and Student Government President Devin Schwartz. After learning about the need for this structure and the benefits it will bring to our ever-growing student body, everyone was invited out to the edge of the construction site to witness our speakers and guests taking turns symbolically breaking ground on the project.

At more than 360,000 gross square feet, the facility nicknamed “Big Momma” will be the largest structure ever built on campus. In addition to housing classrooms and a 400-seat lecture hall, it will replace the Student Union that has served UT Dallas since 1981, which we’ve now outgrown. The space will also allow many services that are currently spread out across the University to be gathered under one roof. It will be the future home for the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Honors College, the Office of Graduate Education, the Education Abroad Office, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Instructional Technology.
